Recent technological advances have enabled automatic irrigation scheduling using decision support tools. These tools help farmers to make better decisions in managing their irrigation systems, thus improving results while preserving water resources. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the commercial plots automatic irrigation systems combined with remote sensing techniques and ground mapping that allows the formation of regulated deficit irrigation (RDI) strategy.
This study was conducted over three years (2015-2017) in the garden hedges of commercial olive variety ‘Arbequina’ located in Alvarado (Extremadura, Spain). A clear map of electrical conductivity (ECA) and the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) map is generated to characterize the spatial variability plot and classify homogeneous zones in the area. Then, the reference point was chosen to monitor the different irrigation sectors. In 2015, the plan was in accordance with the technical criteria of irrigation farmers across the plot. In 2016 and 2017, two distinct areas of irrigated plots RDI strategy, one under the supervision of experts and others automatically.
The results showed that in a plot heterogeneous use of new technologies can be useful to establish an ideal location for an automatic irrigation system. In addition, automated irrigation scheduling allows for building the RDI strategy recommended by experts, resulting in production homogenizing the entire plot without requiring human intervention.
